Winter Fines for Drivers in Poland: What You Need to Know

Drivers in Poland can face significant fines during winter – for example, for failing to properly clear their car of snow or for warming up the engine.
We have prepared a short and straightforward guide to help you make your winter journey safe and free of unpleasant surprises.
Winter tyres. Winter tyres are not mandatory in Poland. However:
in difficult weather conditions, police may stop your vehicle and inspect the tyres;
tread depth must be at least 1.6 mm;
worn tyres can result in a fine of up to 500 zlotys.
Even without a legal requirement, winter tyres are a matter of your safety on the road.
Fines for a car not cleared of snow and ice
During winter trips, it is especially important to remove snow and ice from your vehicle:
500 zł — for ice on the windows;
500 zł + 8 points — for snow on the licence plates;
300 zł + 8 points — for snow or ice on the headlights;
300 zł — for running the engine while clearing the car;
up to 100 zł — for prolonged idling in the city (over 1 minute), as it pollutes the air.
Lights and visibility
In winter, days are short and visibility is reduced. In Poland, it is mandatory to:
Use dipped headlights at all times
Fine for driving without lights: 100–200 zlotys
Dangerous driving
If a driver is going too fast or making risky manoeuvres on a slippery road, police may increase fines for speeding or other violations.
