An Important Reminder for Ukrainian Parents: School Attendance in Poland Is Mandatory!

September has brought children back to their classrooms, and for Ukrainian families in Poland this comes with an important reminder: children holding UKR status or a residence card are legally required to attend a Polish school.

This is not merely a formality. Unjustified absences can result in fines of up to 10,000 zlotys for parents, and in particularly serious cases — up to 50,000. Moreover, regardless of whether parents are in formal employment or not, the 800⁺ benefit payments may be suspended if the child does not attend school.

Why has Poland made school attendance compulsory?

Poland's Ministry of Education emphasises that the new rules were introduced to give children the opportunity not only to receive an education, but also to integrate into society more easily. According to education experts, it is precisely at school that pupils learn Polish most quickly, make new friends, and gain confidence in everyday life. It also helps to avoid the isolation and stress that refugee children often face when relocating.

According to data from organisations monitoring the education process, the number of Ukrainian children in Polish schools has increased by 13.5% compared to the previous year. Around 152,000 pupils from Ukraine are currently studying there. This shows that an increasing number of families are choosing the Polish education system as the primary one for their children.

Polish educational authorities stress that the aim is not punishment or fines. The priority is to give children the chance to grow, learn, and build confidence in their future. For parents, this also brings greater peace of mind: they can be sure that their child is receiving a quality education, adapting to a new environment, and has every opportunity to thrive in Poland.

If a pupil repeatedly misses classes, the school principal first speaks with the parents. If the school's requirements continue to be ignored, the matter may be referred to local authorities and result in fines being imposed.

What about online schooling in Ukraine?

Previously, many Ukrainian families kept their children enrolled in distance learning under the Ukrainian curriculum. However, this option is now available only for final-year students completing school in the 2024/25 academic year. All other children are required to attend a Polish school.
