Toll roads in Poland: how much they cost and where they are

Poland is consistently improving its infrastructure - road works are underway across the country and the number of transport routes is growing. To finance these processes, some roads have sections with a toll charge. Where are Poland's toll motorways and expressways? How much does it cost to travel on Polish toll roads? Read on to find out.

Where are the toll roads in Poland?

Toll roads are marked with a special sign. The main toll sections in Poland are located on motorways A1, A2, and A4. Since 2024, the e-Toll system has also covered a number of expressways (S1, S2, S3, S5, S6, S7, S8, S10, S11, S12, S14, S16, S17, S19, S22, S51, S52, S61, S74, S79), as well as selected sections of national roads. On these routes, tolls are collected only from vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes and from buses. For cars and motorcycles, these sections remain free of charge.

Motorway A1

On the Gdańsk - Toruń motorway, a toll is payable for the section between the Rusocin and Nowa Wieś junctions. The length of the toll section is approximately 150 km. The price per kilometre is 0.20 PLN. If you are planning to travel the entire route, it is more economical to pay for the full section - this costs 29.90 PLN (approximately 7 euros). Note: in the summer season, the toll price may increase. There are two payment options - at the toll booth at the end of the journey, or via an app.

Motorway A2

On the Świecko - Konin motorway, there is a section stretching over 250 kilometres - this is the longest toll road in Poland. If you prefer not to pay a toll here, you can find an alternative - there are several free road sections running alongside the motorway. Important: on different parts of this route, the price per kilometre ranges from 0.20 to 0.62 PLN. On the most expensive section - Nowy Tomyśl - Konin - motorcyclists receive a discount, paying 50% of the toll. Payment is collected at the toll booth. For heavy goods vehicles - via e-Toll Pl Bilet. Since July 2023, the Konin - Stryków section has been free of charge for motorcycles and vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes.

Motorway A4

In south-eastern Poland there is also a toll road. The 60 km toll section is divided into several parts between junctions and runs along the Kraków - Katowice motorway. On this road there are three payment options:

• via e-Toll Pl Bilet,
• via apps,
• at the toll booth (at entry and exit). Toll charges on the Kraków - Katowice section:
• motorcycles - 8 PLN;
• cars - 16 PLN. One section of this motorway, specifically Wrocław - Gliwice, is toll-bearing only for heavy goods vehicles. Payment is made via e-Toll Pl Bilet. Charges for cars and motorcycles:
• motorcycles - 8.10 PLN;
• cars - 16.20 PLN.

How to pay a toll on a Polish road

When a driver enters a toll road, they receive a special ticket. This ticket must be kept until the end of the toll section - if it is lost, the full toll will be charged regardless of how many "paid" kilometres were actually driven. To travel on sections managed by GDDKiA (General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways), an electronic ticket - e-Toll Pl Bilet - is required. The electronic ticket for travel on a toll road in Poland can be purchased at etoll.gov.pl.

How much does a Polish toll road cost?

Currently, depending on the type of vehicle, the charge ranges from 0.10 to 0.62 PLN per kilometre. Some roads are toll-bearing only for heavy goods vehicles. The final amount also depends on the distance driven. In general, the following payment options are available:

1. At the toll booths of the paid section (dedicated collection points at the entry or exit). These booths may be staffed by employees or operate as an automated system.
2. Tolls on Polish roads can also be paid via apps: Autopay (iOS / Android), mPay (iOS / Android), and others. As a reminder, in 2024 stricter traffic rules and penalties for drivers came into force in Poland, and the toll road network expanded significantly.

Fines for non-payment on a toll road

Late payment or complete failure to pay is a violation subject to a fine of 500 PLN. Exception: if payment did not go through due to a technical fault or insufficient funds, payment within the next 3 days is permitted.
