Residents of certain Polish cities most often feel depressed and hopeless – according to the nto.pl portal, which compiled a ranking of the worst places to live in Poland. The depressing nature of these cities is driven by demographic, ecological, and social factors. The wellbeing of every person in their place of residence depends on many factors, including personal ones. Nevertheless, we invite you to take a closer look at the ranking of the most depressing cities in Poland – it may surprise you.

Which Cities in Poland Are the Most Depressing?

Many of these Polish cities developed around specific industries – metallurgy, mining, chemicals, or heavy manufacturing. However, following the systemic transformation of the 1990s, globalization, and economic restructuring, many factories were closed or privatized in ways that effectively left local communities with no chance of recovery.

Here is the list of the most depressing cities in Poland according to nto.pl:

Kędzierzyn-Koźle

This city is considered "green," has a good quality of life, and relatively high wages. However, its residents frequently struggle with social problems, particularly youth unemployment. In addition, the city offers a limited range of cultural and recreational activities and suffers from poor air quality – which is why it ended up on the list of most depressing cities.

Łódź

The capital of the Łódź Voivodeship and one of the most populous cities in the country (it ranked fourth by population as of 2023). Although Łódź is developing dynamically, the city still grapples with serious problems: high unemployment, poverty, and crime. Conversations about the "gloom" of Łódź therefore have some basis in fact.

Tychy

A city with a successful industrial past is now experiencing the consequences of industrial decline. This is compounded by a significant demographic decline and unemployment. Cultural events in the city are few, which affects the mood of its residents.

Częstochowa

Częstochowa holds historical and religious significance, but unfortunately is experiencing economic stagnation. The city lacks investment, resulting in persistently high unemployment.

Świętochłowice

Yet another industrial city struggling with economic crisis, lack of jobs, and population loss. Social infrastructure is also insufficiently developed here.

Zawiercie

The authors of the ranking argue that with the collapse of industry, Zawiercie lost its identity. Due to social isolation, unemployment, and a lack of prospects for young people, the city landed on the list of depressing places.

Tarnów

Tarnów has great potential, but little investment. The labour market is underdeveloped, causing high unemployment. Residents also experience limited access to modern healthcare.

Radomsko

The city faces economic difficulties, high unemployment, and a low quality of life. Radomsko also cannot boast developed cultural or sports infrastructure.

Piotrków Trybunalski

A historically significant city experiencing economic crisis, social problems, and high unemployment. There are few prospects for young people here.

Przemyśl

A city rich in history and culture – but also burdened with demographic problems, unemployment, and economic stagnation. Young people leave in droves – the share of working-age residents is growing. Przemyśl lacks jobs, and the city itself struggles to adapt to change.

As a rule, cities find it difficult to escape from crisis. One problem drags another in its wake – the lack of jobs drives young people away, fewer people means less tax revenue, cities stop being attractive to investors, and local governments have no funds to modernise infrastructure or provide quality services. Moreover, many cities are located on the periphery, far from major transport routes, which deepens their isolation.

What Does "Depressing City" Mean?

For urban officials, planners, and sociologists, the concept of a "depressing city" includes the following indicators: → depopulation (a declining number of residents); → economic stagnation; → high unemployment; → deteriorating infrastructure; → low level of investment; → poor environmental conditions; → breakdown of social ties; → low quality of life.

Interestingly, the nto.pl ranking includes cities that are considered quite successful by some of these criteria – namely Łódź and Kędzierzyn-Koźle. Łódź is developing dynamically, and Kędzierzyn-Koźle is regarded as a "green" city with good wages. But a more complete picture emerges from the full data and statistics. In the case of Łódź, the key issue is demographics – the city is rapidly losing residents (in 2021 it was still the third-largest city in Poland by population; two years later it had dropped to fourth). Additional negative factors include environmental problems and the unsatisfactory health of residents.

In Kędzierzyn-Koźle, people in certain sectors earn decent wages, but the mortality rate is one of the highest in Poland. Some districts are affected by depopulation and transport isolation. According to GUS data, birth rates in the city are falling, and young people are leaving constantly. So the "depressiveness" of these cities is not about a bad reputation – it reflects real, multi-faceted problems.
