Online Patient Profile in Poland: How to Set It Up and Why You Need It

Internetowe Konto Pacjenta (IKP) is an online patient account in Poland that lets you quickly view your medical history, obtain an electronic prescription, or get a referral from your doctor.
If you use state health insurance in Poland (NFZ), we strongly recommend registering and maintaining an electronic patient profile. The digitisation of healthcare in Poland has been ongoing for several years. Since 2020, electronic prescriptions for medication have been introduced, and since early 2021 — electronic referrals from doctors. If you have a profile, these options are available to you online at any time.
What is available in the online patient account?
The online patient account in Poland is, above all, convenient. Its developers and healthcare legislators made sure that genuinely useful data and options are available there.
In particular, in IKP you will find information about:
- e-prescriptions — issued, fulfilled, and partially fulfilled;
- medication dosages prescribed by your doctor;
- the history of your clinic/doctor visits and other medical events, including those paid for privately;
- the assistance you received and the amount the National Health Fund (NFZ) paid for the services;
- issued referrals to specialists, including electronic ones;
- electronic orders placed for medical devices;
- e-sick leave certificates and medical statements issued due to illness or maternity;
- your vaccination history;
- the medical history of a loved one who has authorised you to view their data, as well as the medical history of your child under 18;
- the health insurance taken out in your name (including who took it out and when), the amount of contributions paid, and the date the last contribution was registered;
- medications (you can check all medications approved in Poland);
- your medical devices reimbursed by the National Health Fund;
- electronic medical records (EDM), such as test results and descriptions, doctors' diagnoses, hospital discharge summaries, emergency department documents — if the doctor or facility has added them to the system;
- your individual medical care plan (IPOM) along with the treatment schedule.
In addition to information, the patient account is also a versatile practical tool. Through IKP in Poland you can:
◆ receive an e-prescription via SMS or email — simply enter your phone number or email address;
◆ receive an e-prescription without visiting a doctor's office (in the case of a chronic condition and following a consultation, e.g. by phone, with a doctor);
◆ place an online order for e-prescriptions for indefinite-term medications, provided the facility accepts such requests;
◆ register your child for a free vaccination;
◆ change your primary care doctor, nurse, or midwife;
◆ authorise a relative or doctor to collect your prescriptions or view your medical records;
◆ grant the parent who did not register the child for insurance access to the child's IKP;
◆ apply for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC — Europejska Karta Ubezpieczenia Zdrowotnego);
◆ obtain an electronic referral for a free check-up under the "Prevention 40 Plus" (Profilaktyka 40 plus) programme and immediately book an appointment;
◆ convert an e-prescription into a cross-border prescription;
◆ download the EU COVID certificate (UCC).
As you can see, the online patient account saves a great deal of time and effort, and makes dealing with healthcare matters in Poland much easier.
How to create an online patient account?
An online patient profile in Poland can be registered by any adult (children under 18 are registered by their parents).
