Why Do Students in Poland Receive a Higher Rate?
You may notice in job listings that the rate for students differs significantly from the standard one. The question arises — why is that? Why do students earn more?
The answer is simple and lies in the specifics of Poland's tax system. Students under 26 are not required to pay income tax or pension fund contributions. They receive the gross rate, whereas non-students or employees aged 26 and over receive the net rate (after tax deductions).
There is only one exception — under an employment contract (umowa o pracę) such privileges do not apply. However, if you work under a civil-law contract (umowa zlecenia) or a specific-task contract (umowa o dzieło), the rate will be higher.
Let's compare the difference with a few examples.
Forklift order picker in Krosno Odrzańskie:
standard rate — 23.65 PLN/hr, student rate — 33 PLN/hr.
Pharmacy warehouse worker in Tychy:
standard rate — 19 PLN/hr, student rate — 23.5 PLN/hr.
Worker at a plastics production plant in Jelenia Góra:
standard rate — 19 PLN/hr, student rate — 23.5 PLN/hr.
Warehouse workers in Żabia Wola:
standard rate — 21 PLN/hr, student rate — 24.5 PLN/hr.
What Positions Can Students Apply For?
Students typically look for work that accommodates their class schedule, since skipping classes is not common practice in Poland. Not all companies can offer a flexible schedule, but there are employers who are interested in working with students and willing to make concessions. If you study in the evening or part-time format, you will have more work opportunities.
With no prior experience, you can be hired:
⇒ in manufacturing — for example, at plants and factories in the food or light industry;
⇒ in warehouses — many logistics companies are located near major university cities;
⇒ in the service sector.
