How to Congratulate Poles on Christmas and New Year in Polish?

How do you greet Poles on the holidays? For those celebrating Christmas and New Year in Poland for the first time, this can be a genuinely important question. If you have only just started learning Polish and are not yet confident in your skills, which Christmas greetings in Polish will sound natural?

The first thing to know is that Poles celebrate Christmas (Boże Narodzenie) according to the Gregorian calendar — on 25 December. In 2023, Ukraine also switched to this calendar, which means we are now synchronised and can celebrate the holidays together with Polish friends and acquaintances.

Christmas Eve in Poland falls on the same date as elsewhere — the evening before Christmas, 24 December. Poles call it Wigilia, and by local tradition it is the most solemn and important evening of the entire year. New Year's Day (Nowy Rok) is the same across all European countries — 1 January. The eve of the celebration is called Sylwester in Polish. St Nicholas Day in Poland is known as Mikołajki, and the entire winter holiday season is referred to as okres świąteczny.
