How to Wish Someone a Happy Birthday in Polish

новий сайт (52) (1).png In Poland, just as in Ukraine, a birthday is a reason to gather with the people who matter and say something warm and heartfelt. But if you're just starting to learn Polish or want to impress a Polish colleague, it's worth knowing a few phrases and traditions that are simply part of everyday life here.

How do you wish someone a happy birthday or name day in Polish? What do you say to someone on their name day? This article covers the key phrases and short birthday greetings in Polish.

What to Know About Birthday Celebrations in Poland

Let's start with a few facts that might surprise you. Many Poles consider their name day (imieniny) at least as important an occasion as their birthday - if not more so. Name days are taken seriously: colleagues might bring a cake to the office, and family might gather for dinner. Traditional Ukrainian birthday celebrations differ somewhat from Polish ones. A big spread with multiple salads, a hot dish, and sides is not the Polish norm. A popular format is one where invited guests each bring something to the table - and not just alcohol or sweets.

You might be surprised to learn that the traditional song "Sto lat" is not only sung at birthdays. You'll hear it at weddings, anniversaries, and many other occasions that Poles consider worth celebrating. It's worth learning the words - start with these verses: Sto lat, sto lat, niech żyją, żyją nam Sto lat, sto lat, niech żyją, żyją nam Jeszcze raz, jeszcze raz niech żyją, żyją nam Niech żyją nam! Niech im gwiazdka pomyślności nigdy nie zagaśnie, nigdy nie zagaśnie, a w tym nowym, wspólnym życiu świeci coraz jaśniej, a w tym nowym, wspólnym życiu świeci coraz jaśniej! (May they live a hundred years, may they live for us / Once more, once more, may they live for us! / May their star of good fortune never go out / and in this new life together shine ever brighter!)

How to Wish Poles a Happy Birthday

You've probably already gathered that you can wish someone a happy birthday with just "Sto lat" - the Polish equivalent of the Ukrainian "Многая літа" (Long may you live). Said with energy and enthusiasm, your sincerity will be in no doubt. That said, this is the beginner level. Here's a handy glossary of expressions for birthday and name day greetings. The Polish word for birthday is urodziny. On your birthday in Poland, you'll receive pozdrowienia (greetings) - or even serdeczne pozdrowienia (warm greetings). "Pozdrawiam" means "I send my regards." The classic wish for "all the best" is wszystkiego najlepszego. To wish someone something specific, start with "Życzę Ci..." - meaning "I wish you...". Another useful phrase is "z okazji" - meaning "on the occasion of." Put it together and you get: Wszystkiego najlepszego z okazji urodzin. (All the best on the occasion of your birthday.)
