How to check and restore PESEL with UKR status in Poland
PESEL with UKR status is an identification number granted to citizens of Ukraine in Poland under temporary protection. Having this status confirms legal stay in the country and gives the right to work, access to medical and social services, as well as the use of state systems.
At the same time, in practice, Ukrainians often encounter situations where the UKR status disappears, is suspended, or is not displayed in the registers. In such cases, it is important to know how to check the validity of PESEL and what to do to restore it.
Why it is important to check PESEL UKR status
Checking the status is necessary in the following situations:
- before employment or changing jobs;
- when applying for a residence permit;
- when using medical or social services;
- after a long stay outside Poland;
- if there are problems confirming legal status.
An inactive or lost status may have serious consequences for staying and working in Poland.
Why UKR status may be lost
The most common reasons:
- stay outside Poland longer than the permitted period — more than 30 days;
- change of legal status without updating information;
- technical errors or inconsistencies in state systems;
- lack of up-to-date residence data.
In many cases, the status may be suspended automatically without separate notification.
How to check if PESEL with UKR status is active
There are two ways to check the validity of the status:
- visit Urząd Miasta or Urząd Gminy in person;
- check the data online via a state service.
How to check status online
- Go to the official data verification service in the PESEL register on gov.pl.
- Log in using Profil Zaufany or another permitted method.
3.After logging in, open your data in the PESEL register.
- Check the field related to foreigner status.
If the system shows UKR or a dash, the status is considered valid. If other information is displayed or the status is missing, it may indicate loss or change.
How to restore PESEL with UKR status
If during the check it turns out that the UKR status is lost or not displayed, you need to contact Urząd Miasta or Urząd Gminy.
UKR status can be restored only in the following cases:
- if the person confirms that they stayed outside Poland for no more than 30 days;
- if the person re-enters Poland from Ukraine due to military actions.
What to do if the status is not restored
If the UKR status cannot be restored, it is necessary to obtain another legal basis for stay in Poland, such as a residence permit or another allowed status. Such cases are considered individually.
